5 Quit Smoking Tips
Quit smoking tips come in many forms and ideas. Although they may come from different
sources all quit smoking tips have the same 5 basics. After being an avid smoker for ten years I've looked everywhere for help and will share with you the foundation of many quit smoking tips.
Quit Smoking Tips #1: Commit!
I have tried quitting many times in my ten years smoking. What made my last time different was the way I showed my commitment. People can say they are going to quit or its my last time, but until they commit FULLY of themselves they will fall short. Tell everyone you know about your quest. Not just your wife or siblings, TELL EVERYONE! Coworkers, friends, aquaintances, anyone and everyone whom you believe will hold you accountable for your actions. I say hold you accountable because this will eliminate people like family members who will let it slide this one time. As much as they care for you, they need to let you know it's wrong.

Quit smoking tips #2: Make a Plan
Have you ever heard the term "Failing to plan is a plan to fail"? Well it's true! I feel this is a main reason so many people have a hard time with quitting. It's like driving across America without a map, you may get lost. I am a big believer in keeping things simple so when it comes to planning, keep it simple. Start by setting big goals like stop smoking for 6 months. Then break that big goal down into smaller goals like not buying your next pack. Then don't smoke for one day, then two days, then a week, then a month,...etc. Soon you will have quit altogether, but it won't be easy. Which bring's us to...
Quit smoking tips #3: Join a Support Group
Realize that you can't do this alone. Nicotine addiction is very powerful in most cases and requires the support of others to help overcome. Joining a support group in your own community or even online can be a big help. They may encourage a healthier lifestyle like diet and exercise. Getting into shape was a big motivator for me to quit. After I realized that my life was at stake and the effects it would cause to my two children got me on the fast track to being smoke free. That was part of my support group.
Quit smoking tips #4: Stay away!
Every time I tried to quit and failed it was mainly due to not keeping cigaretts away as far as possible. If it was around somewhere, I was going to have it. My biggest problem was at break times when I was at work. Knowing that it was my "Designated smoke time" often made going to work very hard (aside from the work part). Keeping myself distracted when cravings hit proved useful. Eating a snack, taking 10 deep breaths, staying inside for breaks, doing these small things helped the cravings pass. Just remember, the cravings ALWAYS pass.
Quit smoking tips #5: Ask your doctor for help
Your doctor may prescribe medications that help make the process easier. Things like the nicotine patch or nicotine nasal spray, or even a nicotine inhaler may make help with the transition to a smoke free lifestyle. Not to mention your doctor may even play an important role in your support group. Especially if you have been seeing them since you were a child like I have.

Great Hub! Welcome to Hubpages. I've been trying to quit for about a year. I do good for a week or two but somehow always give in to the urge. Thanks for the advice.
